Yoga offers many physical and psychological health benefits for those of all ages. As a practicing Buddhist, I became very interested in the numerous health benefits of yoga. There are many schools of yoga, each with its own strengths and limitations. However, I quickly realized that there were three main areas of concentration in yoga. The first area is Pranayama, which is breathing exercises.
Breathing exercises, such as pranayama, have been proven to reduce stress and anxiety levels. By reducing the stress hormone cortisol, a state of constant and intense worry and tension is reduced. Yoga helps us relax by reducing the levels of our “fight-or-flight” response to various events. Well-balanced yoga practice helps many people lower their stress hormone cortisol and lower their blood pressure.
Mental health is also important to overall wellbeing. Yoga helps us think more clearly and perform better at our jobs. When we practice yoga, it increases our attention span, which allows us to focus on more things and therefore improves our mental health. It is an effective stress management technique.
Relaxation and Meditation
Another area of concentration within the study of yoga is relaxation and meditation. Yoga incorporates meditation and controlled breathing exercises into the practice to maximize the benefits of each exercise. Meditation is believed to increase relaxation and calmness, while controlled breathing exercises help to lower anxiety and stress.
Yoga practice has also been shown to lower the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone. This is because controlled breathing and relaxation exercises actually remove muscle tension. Muscle tension and stress hormone production are believed to be one of the primary causes of heart attack, stroke, and high blood pressure. The researchers believe that practicing yoga may lead to more stable vision due to the increased focus and attention focused on the breath and body.
The benefits of yoga are likely to become even more pronounced as additional research is conducted on its mental and physical benefits.
