5 Things To Do Before Moving Into a New Home

Congratulations if you recently purchased a new home or decided to rent one! I am so excited for you! With a new home comes a lot of new responsibilities and to-dos on your list, and a lot of these things probably need to be done before moving into a new home or shortly after. When you create that long to-do list, try not to get overwhelmed. You will get through all of it!

The first step is to weigh each to-do and see if it’s necessary or not. There are a lot of things that you might want to do that are not really *needed*. So, as you finish out your list, figure out what is needed, what is not needed, and what needs to come first. If you are struggling with this process, get a second set of eyes on your list for their opinion and/or follow this list of things to do before moving into a new home.

Not everything has to be done at once, so relax and slowly work your way through your list. Turning a house into a home takes time and effort – don’t stress out because your list WILL get done slowly but surely…and that’s the way to do it! Here are a few things to do before moving into a new home that you probably should put more of a priority on:

Declutter

I know this is on every moving checklist, but it is important to do before moving. If you do not declutter before moving, you are sure to do it when unpacking, and trust me – that is NOT what you want to be doing when you are in a new home! Go ahead and declutter before moving into your new home. It might take a bit more upfront, but it will be worth it.

Have it inspected for environmental hazards?

If you are purchasing your home, or even if you are renting, the sooner you can test your home for environmental hazards, the better! Mold and other toxins can be living in your walls, carpets, HVAC units, and more, and they have the potential to make you very, very sick. You do not want to get into a new home only to get ill. If you are buying your home, have it tested for mold and radon (+ anything else that you might want to have it tested for) before you sign your contract.

Start any renovation projects beforehand

If you are doing any messy home renovations (or even painting), it’s best to do it before you move in, if it’s possible. With your furniture out of the home, it will be much faster, more affordable, and easier to get your home renovations done beforehand.

Line up your mail, bills, and other services

This is a must when it comes to getting things done BEFORE you move. To make things as smooth as possible when you are in your new home, line up your mail, bills, and other services to forward directly to your new home. You also need to notify your friends and family members because packages will not forward to your new address.

Let your movers work their magic

Finally, let your movers work their magic. Don’t stress too much when you are moving – let the professionals handle it! All you need to do is help direct them when they are delivering your furniture into your new home. Easy, peasy, right?
